Im not an expert on the topic nor have I read her, but from what you wrote here its interesting that it seems like someone in the Middle Ages like Saint Catherine was already aware of unconscious self sabotage way before psychiatry developped, even if she didnt use that term.
Obviously she had other issues and what she was doing was at the end of the day against christian doctrine she claimed to profess, but its still surprising to me.
